Alan Steinbeck, AICP and Caroline Dwyer, AICP will be presenting a session on Wednesday September 13th titled “Transforming Distressed Public Housing Through the HUD Choice Neighborhoods Program.”
Renaissance presented a poster session at this year’s annual ITE meeting in Anaheim, California. Daniel Hardy, PE, PTE and Ed Mierzejewski, PE presented a poster that describes the why, what and how of multimodal accessibility based on our experience on a variety of projects.
Multimodal Accessibility, or MMA, is an emerging transportation planning framework that helps frame challenges and identify solutions. MMA measures transportation system performance in a manner that is mode-neutral, scalable to a wide range of geographies, and responsive to both land use and transportation system scenarios. Our poster described several case studies that demonstrate how MMA can help transportation planners diagnose challenges and identify and decide on solutions. Shaping our built environment around improved accessibility as a central consideration can foster cities that work, improving both day-to-day and long-term outcomes of the regions we inhabit.

Renaissance is participating this week in the TRB sponsored conference “Use of Scenario Planning in Transportation Planning.” The conference is being held in Portland, Oregon and is exploring practical uses of scenario planning in transportation, including strategies to develop scenarios and ways that transportation plans can respond to scenarios. The event is bringing together officials from state departments of transportation, metropolitan planning organizations, and local agencies, consultants, and researchers to share knowledge, experiences and the latest how to’s on using scenario planning in transportation.
The conference format includes case studies, interactive exercises and hands-on workshops and skill building. Katharine Ange, AICP, worked with partners from FHWA to develop presentation materials and design a hands-on workshop session that engaged participants in mock scenario planning to address a range of issues including planning increasing frequency of extreme weather events, the advancement of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs), and multimodal corridor transformation. The session also highlighted the release of two FHWA scenario planning guidebooks for which Renaissance staff served as contributing authors including.
This Thursday, February 24th, Renaissance’s Vlad Gavrilovic will be presenting at The American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials’ (AASHTO) 2016 Washington Briefing Meeting.
The Washington Briefing is an annual meeting on the legislative issues and policy challenges facing state departments of transportation. Attendees include Congressional members and staff, federal executive branch leaders, partner associations, and media representatives. Vlad will participating in the Thursday session: Move Quicker or Live Closer? Examining Mobility and Accessibility. The session will focus on analytical tools and frameworks that State DOT's are developing to better incorporate mobility and accessibility measures into the decision-making process and make project funding more transparent. The session will highlight a number of state DOT's including the Virginia DOT. Vlad will be presenting the accessibility metric used for Virginia's first ever House Bill 2 (HB2) transportation funding prioritization process.
HB2 is an innovative state law, signed by Governor Terry McAuliffe in 2014, directed the state’s transportation decision-making authority – the Commonwealth Transportation Board – to create a transparent and objective process that invests “limited tax dollars in the right projects that meet the most critical transportation needs in Virginia.” The CTB created six factors that use quantifiable metrics on which to score proposed projects and compare proposed transportation investments: safety, congestion management, environmental quality, land use, economic development, and accessibility.
Renaissance Planning was honored to be a part of the project and was the sole analyst for the accessibility metric, which quantified access to jobs and access to jobs for disadvantaged populations for all eligible auto and transit projects. Accessibility scores were generated for well over 300 projects using a set of tools we have developed that are part of our multimodal accessibility framework. The HB2 scoring process was completed in early January, and the CTB is now in the process of using the scores to inform their prioritization and funding decisions. A draft improvement program is expected in April, with a final decision due in July. The state has already committed to using the same scoring process for 2017.
